GSMA bets on IoT as biggest market for the mobile industry in coming years

Another Mobile World Congress, now renamed "MWC19 Barcelona", has ended. We were at the Groupe Spéciale Mobile Association (GSMA) 8th Mobile IoT Summit to learn what the operators and other stakeholders in the mobile industry think about IoT and its impact.

While the launch of 5G and "foldable" handsets were the two big stars of the consumer side of the show, the industry also discussed other challenges and opportunities, the biggest theme of which was IoT.

The new mobile connection is an IoT device

If there is something the industry agrees on, it is that IoT represents the most significant mobile growth for operators, internet companies, and service providers.

More than 5 billion people around the world already enjoy the use of mobile services, either by using a smartphone, a basic handset, a tablet, or some other connected personal device. Since 2013, the industry has added another billion subscribers, although the rate of growth is slowing.

The Internet of Things, however, is growing exponentially. While most of the connections are using non-cellular technologies such as Bluetooth, LoRa, WiFi, and others, the number of IoT devices connected to mobile carriers, using LTE-M and NB-IoT, is also growing much faster than handset subscriptions.
