ST's low-power fabs are just what Europe needs
Plans for new low-power fabs in France and Italy lay solid foundations to develop IoT chip production, writes editor and publisher Josh Brooks.
By EW Staff Electronic Weekly, Oct. 19, 2017 – Europe will get a solid foundation for IoT chip making if ST's plans to build two new 300mm fabs in France and Italy, producing sensors, imagers, photonics and MEMS, bear fruit (see ST plans new fabs in France and Italy).
For European electronics, this is just what the doctor ordered in a world which will be making billions of IoT nodes, almost all of them dedicated to sensing something.
In June, renowned European semiconductor research organisations Leti of France and Fraunhofer of Germany announced they would pool resources for the good of Europe, placing their bets on the design and manufacture of sensors and power electronics. Infineon, Bosch, Global Foundries, X-Fab, and Soitec were mentioned among those European resources.
