OmniPhy Announces Silicon-Proven Ethernet PHY IP Adoption in China

OmniPhy, the leading supplier of Ethernet PHY intellectual property (IP) for the consumer, automotive, and industrial markets today announced the widespread adoption of silicon-proven Ethernet PHY IP in the cost-sensitive China market.

Introduced decades ago, Ethernet technology has become truly ubiquitous, entrenching itself into every facet of our everyday lives including our homes, cars, and factories. The technology benefits from reliability and robustness built over this period of decades, and a very vibrant and active set of IEEE 802.3 working groups who are continuously optimizing and tailoring it for emerging applications. Previously, customers have designed this feature using a discrete IC. This added cost and complexity, but for a long time this was the only alternative.

Several years ago, OmniPhy, a specialty IP company with emphasis on advanced mixed-signal design and digital signal processing in physical layer connectivity, invested heavily in helping customers tackle the upcoming integration needs. In 2012, the team developed the first EEE compliant 28nm Ethernet PHY on the market and made it available for general industry use. Since then, the concept has spread like wildfire, and the company has successfully put 10/100 into volume production in several markets. SoC vendors can now choose from a variety of process technologies, knowing that their IP is reliable and silicon proven. "If you look at the history of the SoC market, it very much follows integration of the discrete components and devices on a PC board into a single silicon die. Seemingly, one of the last standout IC's which need to be included on-board is the Ethernet functionality, particularly the Ethernet PHY. It is really not a matter of "if it needs to be included"... it is really a matter of "when it needs to be included". As the market evolves and higher integration leads to lower cost improvements for end users, those SoC providers not having a fully integrated Ethernet solution, both MAC and PHY on-board the SoC, are at a distinct business disadvantage compared to those SoC providers who include it for their end users in traditional STB markets as well as the emerging IoT markets.
