Make it easy, say speakers at Electronics Weekly IoT design conference

Making IoT design accessible to all was one of the themes this morning of the IoT Design Conference run by Electronics Weekly at The Brewery in London.

By David Manners-Electronics Weekly, Dec. 03, 2015 –

"Arm's focus is how to put security on a $1 microcontroller design with no security expertise," said Arm director for emerging technologies Gary Atkinson. "This is what Arm is trying to solve because most microcontroller designs are done with Arm microcontrollers."

Arm has extended its TrustZone security to the Armv8-M family which, said Atkinson, "has a hardware switch built into it".

The hardware point is the key. Imagination Technologies made exactly the same point - that security has to be put in at the very bottom level.

"Security needs to be a fundamental design element from the start, " said Bryce Johnstone, senior manager, automotive sector marketing at Imagination Technologies. "You can layer on security software to some extent but, if it's not in the silicon you are building on sand."

Making IoT design accessible to all was also stressed by Nick O'Leary, emerging technology specialist at IBM's Emerging Technology Services unit.

"The technology is at a point where people can build things and they don't have to be engineers," said O'Leary. "The time you spend doing boiler-plate tasks is time not spent working on your ideas."

"IoT design is not one-size-fits all," added O'Leary. "We need tools that make it easy for developers at all levels. "IBM has tools called Node-RED and BlueMix to deliver this ease of use."

There is a need for speed in all this, pointed out John Jones, innovation director at Avnet. "If the IoT market is going to grow as we hope," said Jones, "we need to react to business cases as soon as possible or they will go away."
